Title: Review of Genetic and DNA Concepts -Tying It All Together

Lesson Overview:

This lesson will take one class period. In this lesson, I will review what the students have learned to date. This will identify gaps in knowledge and show me where the students strengths and weakness are. This will help tailor the following lessons based on what the students know. The lesson will involve a game to test how much the students understand genetics. Then, we will go over the results of the game and generate a flow map. The flow map is designed to tie in all the concepts students have already learned. The class will end with an overview of the upcoming unit.

Objectives

The students will explain, diagram, and make connections using the following questions:
What is a chromosome?
What is gene? Where is it located?
How do they work?
What is a Genome?
Student's will demonstrate they understand working definitions of the following vocabulary:
Genotype
Phenotype
Allele
Dominant
Recessive
Trait
Homozygous
Heterozygous

Instruction

Opening

Who likes challenges or games?/ What do you do to challenge yourself? -Making personal connections to students' lives
What is the importance of a challenge?/ Why do we challenge ourselves?- Getting students to think about self- assessment and pushing themselves? Intrinsic Motivation
Why is it important to review and tie concepts together?- To show students what they have learned is important and to practice what they have learned- Keeping things fresh in the mind
Today we are going to review what the students know about genetic concepts.

Learning Activities

-Review Challenge/ Intro to Flow Charts
-Modeling how to make a Flow Chart
-Making a Flow Chart- using genetic concepts
-Take a few notes

Closing

Group Discussion to Answer the following Questions:
-How challenging was the activity? How do you feel after a challenging activity?
-Reflect on how the students preformed in their self- assessment. Students will identify where they have misunderstandings.
-Explain to students what I will be teaching them for the next unit and how it ties into what we just reviewed.
-Assign homework

Assessment

Informal assessment through the review challenge. This is also a form of self-assessment

Homework

Review of Meiosis by making a flow chart
Homework will be collected the following class for a homework grade.
